New Zealand’s South Island!

After a ferry trip from Wellington we arrived in Picton on North Island.

South Island’s landscape is even more beautiful than on the North Island.

To the south along the West Coast

We started with Marlborough Sound and Abel Tasman National Park and continued to drive along the west coast to the south.

The Pancake Rocks were definitely a highlight and our hostel there in the middle of jungle – definitely worth a recommendation (YHA Punakaiki, we spent three nights there).

North Island’s west coast is wild and beautiful. Of course, there are also beautiful sunsets here.

The New Zealand Alps

Later we passed the glaciers (Franz Josef and Fox), crossed the Alps to Queenstown. We disliked it, as we didn’t go skiing (too crowded) so we only stayed one night.

Not to be missed: The ‘View of the views’

Milford Sound was amazing, althought it was raining (as it does on more than 300 days per year).

Back north along the East Coast

Subsequently to Dunedin, New Zealand’s most beautiful city. We spent three nights here.

The steepest street in the world north of Dunedin. Of course we climbed it.

On the way up north to Christchurch we passed Moeraki Boulders.

In Kaikoura there are countless seals. Unfortunately we didn’t go whale watching. The area’s landscape is stunning, so we spent further two nights here.

Later on by ferry back to the North Island. Due to a heavy storm, almost half of the passengers got sea sick. Some (or even many) threw up into the sea. Interesting experience!
