As a part time romantic, this might be my favourite article so far. At the same time, it wasn’t easy to write it as there are way more than ten sunsets we had seen. Of course, there are so many places on planet earth, where you can see a beautiful sunset. But hey – our blog, our list. Basta!
What you need for the perfect sunset
Generally a good view in western direction is obviously an advantage! You don’t need a cloud free sky. Some clouds even look quite pretty on pictures.
The key for the perfect sunset experience are the right location and your personal mood. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Thailand on the beach or on your balcony – you can see the perfect sunset everywhere. But not everywhere it will feel the same!
No matter if it’s cold or warm, the location it is. A cold evening on your balcony is not the same as standing up on the Rockefeller in NYC. Really, it’s not. No matter how hard you try to tell yourself.
And even if it’s warm and sunny on your balcony, having a cold drink in your hand lying on Bali’s beaches is always better.
After basic requirements are fulfilled, the last thing you need for the perfect sunset is the weather god making a good job.
And so the following places made it to our list. Please ignore the order. It would be too hard to decided on that!
1. Gili Trawangan, Bali, Indonesia
The colour spectrum goes from yellow to orange and deep red at the end! It was a spectacle for everyone on the island. Gili Trawangan raised the bar for sunsets really high.
2. Bali West Coast, Indonesia
Just like in Gili T, just less red and more like deep orange. Legian, Uluwatu or Jimbaran – Bali’s west coast is well visited for a reason.
3. Ko Chang, Thailand
Our favourite island in Thailand. It’s calm, the beaches are great and every day you can see a fantastic sunset from Kae Bae Beach. Romance at its best!
4. Key West, Florida, USA
Less calm but not less beautiful. The sunset on Florida’s Keys biggest island was amazing. Watching the sunset here feels kind of like a party. People gather at the port to watch the sunset together. Just like when airplanes are landing, people start clapping when the sun goes down. It’s a great atmosphere.
5. Rockefeller Center, New York City, USA
It was bitter cold in March, but standing outside in the cold was totally worth the view. We got rewarded with a colourful sky. Though it was the busiest time to visit Rockefeller, it’s no problem getting inside, if you book your ticket in advance.
6. Snaefellsness, Iceland
It was one of those moments: You’ve just spent a long day seeing beautiful destinations and you’re just tired and want to go back to your hotel. But then there is this beautiful sunset over the snowy landscape. Of course, we had to make a stop!
7. Capo Testa, Sardinia, Italy
The stormy wind had almost blown us away and I got a bad cold afterwards. But it was worth the sunset at Sardinia’s most northern point. Of course, the rock landscape is also impressive by daylight. But at sunset, it becomes perfect.
8. Cabo de São Vicente, Algarve, Portugal
Another windy place. It’s Europe’s south-westernmost point and it’s really popular at sunset. This mysterious place and its legends make people from all over the Algarve costa come here every day.
9. Willemstad, Curaçao, Caribbean
What else would you expect of the Caribbean? Booking such a trip, you already expect perfect sunsets to be included in the price. From the Handelskade we enjoyed the purple sky and the sunset was amazing!
10. Lac d’Annecy, France
Unexpected and therefore maybe more intense. At least, this was just a place at a lake. Yes, dear ladies and gentlemen. This was my first sunset at a lake. It took until our trip to Annecy to happen and thank God it was this beautiful.
Where did you see your most beautiful sunsets?
