You can do everything and nothing here. To be honest, what we loved most in Ubud was just hanging around at cafés and bars with a great view over rice fields. Combined with a glass of Hatten wine and the day evolved from fabulous to ‘the word for this doesn’t exist yet’!
There are a lot of Expats here and you can see them all hanging around in those places, working or just doing nothing. We stayed five nights in Ubud, which was perfect for us. But what else can you do here besides of doing nothing? Here is a potential list for you!
Monkey Forest
If you don’t want to risk to get bitten, scratched or peed on by the macaques, you better don’t buy bananas or something else to eat.
I’m not sure whether it’s worth taking the risk to get hepatitis or canine madness. It was not worth for us.
Without food, you don’t have to fear them. They’re not interested in you!
Market
We loved the market in Ubud. I was very successful there.
If you’re willing to get rid of your money, this is the place to be: Sarongs, dresses, bathing suites, shoes, souvenirs – everything you expect from an asian market. Like everywhere else: You have to bargain.
Detox
You have to enjoy one of those delicious drinks. Just because of the Eat-Pray-Love thing, you know!
We didn’t really feel detoxed, but these fruit-vegetable-mixtures tasted really good.
Kecak Dance
You should see this dance show as it is very interesting. You’ll probably not going to understand anything, but that’s not necessary.
We really liked the show but we wouldn’t recommend to sit in first or second row. At the end of the show, my arms where covered with ash from the burning wood. Furthermore, we both had a huge earworm after the show!
„Want massas?“
We know, it’s unpolite to laugh about this. But it would be boring, if we didn’t. This was the third most asked question in Ubud, straight after “Taxi, taxi?” and “Cheap, cheap?”.
Nevertheless you should really take the chance and do some wellness here. There’s huge competition in Ubud, so you should compare prices. And compared to Europe, the US or Australia, the prices are too good to be true.
For example: We paid 80.000 Rupiah for a one hour Balinese massage. When I saw the lady’s feet, I decided to pay more for my pedicure in a more luxury Spa. This decision turned out to be a wise one. If you pay more in Bali, you will get more!
Rice fields
In Ubud, around Ubud, everywhere. That’s what we think is Bali.
There’s not much to say, but they became more beautiful the more we came outside.
Trips to the surroundings
Ubud is located centrally in Bali and as there are a lot of providers, it’s the perfect starting point to make trips to the surroundings. Especially to the north and east. From Ubud, we visited Pura Besakih and Tirta Empul.
Tegalalang Rice Fields
You have to see this place. You have to pay an entrance fee and it’s full of tourists. But it’s soooooooooo amazingly beautiful!
We were not sure, if this place was only made for tourists. But it was soooooooo beautiful!
Kokokan Birds
Every day, herons gather in one village around sunset time. White bodies, yellow heads. What’s great with that? Unfortunately, the pictures don’t do it justice.
But they gather at the same trees everyday and suddenly the green tree becomes a white one. Their approach and their fights for the best places are also a spectacle. You shouldn’t stand or pass directly under the trees, because of their poo!
Well, that’s what we did here. Of course, you could do a lot more here, but doing a little bit of nothing can be amazing!
