In previous posts, we were already talking about our Bavarian background. You can hate or love Bavaria. We do have difficult people here, that’s true. But the moment you’re here, you’ll forget that. This place on earth has a lot to offer!
If you’re longing to idyllic places, southern Bavaria is the place to go for you! Mountain panorama paired with fresh air (Yes, this is the opposite to Singapore), calm and great hiking trails – and one can imagine why people want to live in the boonies. The dot on the i: the Bavarian Lakes!
In summer you can swim here, the other months they’re looking lovely all over! A house at a Bavarian Lake – that’s the dream!
We haven’t been to all lakes, but we can introduce you to a few!
Tegernsee
This lake is located 50km south east of Munich and is residence to some German celebrities. They make it unaffordable to live here. It’s such a peaceful place: The water is clear, the beer gardens are cozy and have good food. Well at least the one we chose for lunch.
We were here in fall. The air is so fresh, you feel like never wanting to return back to the city. The colourful trees make the idyll perfect!
Chiemsee
It’s also called the Bavarian Sea as it is the largest lake in Bavaria. Near Chiemsee you can hike to the Kampenwand, where you’ll have an amazing view over the countryside and the Chiemsee. You can reach the top by using the gondola or by hiking. The Chiemgau region is one of the most popular recreation areas in Bavaria.
Chiemsee is also famous for two islands: The Fraueninsel (women’s island) with its Benedictine Monastery and the Herreninsel (men’s island) with its two castles. We haven’t seen them yet, but it’s definitely going to happen!
For your information: Chiemsee is 90km southeastern of Munich. You have to expect a one hour drive.
Kochelsee
And another idyllic lake that makes you feel like in paradise. Just like at the other lakes, you can swim, hike or make a boat trip. There’s nothing special to this place.
Remarkable: A lot of retirees here. Maybe they’re attracted by the calm.
Starnberger See
It’s Germany’s fifth largest lake and 25km south of Munich. This place is famous for its well-heeled people.
Outside of Bavaria, the lake is also known because of the scandolous death of King Ludwig II in 1886 (the builder of Neuschwanstein). You can read more about this here.
Eibsee
Eibsee shines in all shades of green and blue. Without clouds you can see the top of the Zugspitze, which was not granted to us. Still very beautiful, though. A trip to beautiful Eibsee is always a good idea.
Like the others, it’s south of Munich, about 100km distance.
Königssee
This stretched mountain lake is located in South Eastern Bavaria at the Austrian border. The view from top of the Jenner mountain at the Watzmann and the lake are amazing. On the summit there is a beer garden. You can hike or use the gondola.
The best view is said to be at the Malerwinkel (painters’ point). We suppose that’s true as it is really amazing. Bavarian Fjords are absolutely stunning.
You can use electro boats and visit the pilgrimage chapel St. Bartolomä.
For us Königssee is Germany’s most beautiful lake.
