Croatia’s largest national park is rightly part of the UNESCO world heritage. 16 lakes and 90 waterfalls, surrounded by huge forest areas.
There are the upper and the lower lakes. All are shining in countless blue and green shades depending on time of the year and day.
The area is clean and neat, the tours are well described. At some places and sometimes it was crowded. But all in all it wasn’t too much in the beginning of June (although there were school holidays in Bavaria).
Waterfalls and fish
The waterfalls are deeply impressing due to their size and speed. The largest waterfall is 78 metres high and is therefore Croatia‘s highest waterfall!
You can watch fish through the crystal clear water.
The Plitvice Lakes are one of the greatest natural wonders in Europe. They are a must on every Croatia itinerary, especially if you are here for the first time! Mother Nature has done an excellent job here!
What you should know about Plitvice Lakes
Before you grab your staff and head to Plitvice Lakes, we have some hints and advice for you!
1. Don’t come here in bad weather!
By bad weather we mean: Rain! If it’s a bit cold, that’s no problem with decent clothes! Though pictures will be best in sunshine and the lakes will appear even greener.
For us it could have been worse. It wasn’t perfect, but the days before it was raining. We had partly sunny partly cloudy weather. As we couldn’t change the itinerary it was OK for us!
2. Appropriate clothes!
Most important: good shoes! Thanks to the clouds I wasn’t wearing flip-flops. Sneakers are a must. No high heels! We saw some women and had to laugh. I doubt, they had fun!
Bring a jacket if the forecast doesn’t predict at least 30°C and sun. In July and August you probably don’t need one.
3. Different tours!
When arriving you can decide between different tours. You can research on their homepage and decide. The tours last between two and eight hours.
We did a 3-4 hours tour, covering the lower lakes. The upper ones are to visit the next time!
4. Prices!
Not really a bargain! Parking place is around 2€ per hour. Entrance fee is 15€ per person, doesn’t matter which tour! Prices for food are similar to Germany. All in all definitely worth a visit despite quite high prices.
5. Rules!
You can find them on their homepage! Swimming is not allowed and don’t litter!
