As we were visiting some lakes recently, part 2 of our series is dedicated to them. A lot of times these lakes are not just beautiful but they have lovely towns or cities next to them.
I know this series is called ‘…most beautiful cities…’ but unfortunately there are too many beautiful lakes without a town next to it. We only want to mention lakes and cities we’ve already seen ourselfes.
If you want to visit some of Europe’s most beautiful lakes, you’re well advised with this post. Hope you find the inspiration you need.
Hallstatt Lake, Austria
A picture perfect place at Hallstatt Lake in the Salzkammergut, Austria. The little village looks like it’s naturally grown in the landscape. Bad Hallstatt is really overcrowded. Maybe you should come in the morning or in low season.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
In this case we can start with saying that the town of Bled is actually really ugly. But we immediately forgot that when seeing the little island in the middle of the lake. We’ve never seen such a picturesque lake before.
Lac d’Annecy, France
The Old Town of Annecy is really pretty and lies next to the crystal clear Lac d’Annecy. It’s well visited for a reason. In summer you can go swimming in the lake and have a really good time. The sunset over the lake is perfect.
Eibsee, Bavaria, Germany
No city, no village, nothing. But the lake is extremely beautiful. It appears in all several green shades and if you’re lucky enough, you can enjoy a fabulous view over the Zugspitze. Eibsee belongs to our Top 3 Bavarian lakes.
Königssee, Bavaria, Germany
Definitely my favourite lake in Bavaria. The Königssee is also called ‘Bavarian fjord’ and became famous for its ‘Malerwinkel’ (famous view point used by painters). We think the view from the top of the Jenner Mountain is just as beautiful.
Pragser Wildsee/ Lago di Braies, South Tyrol, Italy
Similar to the Eibsee this lake also shines in all kinds of green shades. There’s no city or village next to it either but the mighty Dolomites in the background make the place an amazing scenery.
Reschensee/ Lago di Resia, South Tyrol, Italy
A usual barrier lake you’d find anywhere in the world. But this one offers you a bell tower looking out of the water which looks really fantastic.
Lago di Como, Italy
Our trip to Lake Como has been some time ago. But we still know how beautiful this place was and Como in summer is a dream.
Lake Lungern, Switzerland
Oh, beautiful Switzerland. We passed this lake on our way to Provence and we had to stop here. The combination of the blue colour of the lake and the surrounding greenery has a hypnotical effect.
Tegernsee, Bavaria, Germany
Another one of our Top 3 Bavarian lakes. Unfortunately it only became famous for rich people having their houses here. But we think everyone should come and see how beautiful it is here.
Lac Saint Croix/Verdon, Provence, France
This barrier lake makes you already wow from a distance. It’s really popular among Provence visitors in summer and especially among kayakers. If you want to enjoy the place by yourself, you shouldn’t come in the first week of August.
What are your favourite lakefront cities?
