I saw this island on pictures and knew, this is going to be on our Croatia list. No sooner said than done.
From Dubrovnik, we continued our trip driving north. Next stop Orebic. On the way there, we enjoyed impressive vineyards and spectacular view points of the Peljesac peninsula. This can extend the drive a bit.
We booked an accommodation in Orebic, which is located vis-á-vis to Korčula. It was called ‘Apartments Vesna’ and we can absolutely recommend it. Clean, parking place, only a five minutes walk to the ferry and a very friendly host.
The car ferry was very expensive. We knew, Orebic is a holiday destination. But we didn’t know that it is that beautiful. It was a good decision to stay there. Especially at the beginning of June it was very quiet. And going out for dinner was cheaper that in Korčula (or in Dubrovnik).
Ferry
The ferry return ticket was 4€ per person. With car it would cost 15€. Having a rental car means you’re not allowed to use the ferry. You have to tell this to your rental car company in advance. Furthermore it costs a lot more.
Using the ferry without permission of your rental car company means bearing the expensive consequences. Just in case you didn’t know. (One just doesn’t have to louse his own holiday intentionally!)
The Old Town of Korčula
The Old Town is very small, but really beautiful. You can strive along the lanes until you get out on the other side . Or you just going around in circles. Just how you feel exploring it. In contrast to Dubrovnik, Korčula wasn’t very crowded at all, at least at the beginning of June.
It’s really a fairy tale island. You have to order Dalmatian antipasti with seafood-yummy!
There are a few cheaper restaurants in the Old Town itself. The Restaurants and taverns with sea view are worth the higher prices. We had perfect weather and a perfect view to Orebic surrounded by the mountains. The crystal clear water was the cherry on the top!
How long should you stay here?
If just want to see the Old Town and eat here, one afternoon is totally enough. I was happy, we missed the ferry we planned to go back, so we could spend more time (until the next ferry) here.
You can spend some nights in Korčula, of course. It’s not very cheap, but affordable. Our problem was the lack of time and the rental car.
Being here with a car, it’s easy to see the whole island and make trips for example to Proizd, a hidden gem located northwest of Korčula. Google this place and you will find out, why to spend time here. I’m pretty sure, people who were there, will try to convince you to head there!
There are tour operators in Dubrovnik offering day trips to this beautiful island. But we don’t have a lot of information to this!
Korčula definitly belongs to every Bucketlist!
