Lisbon is famous for its many viewpoints (Miradouros).
We cannot recommend a special one, because each one is great in its own way. Most are located in Alfama and Bairro Alto.
In the following, we show you those viewpoints, that we were able to enjoy!
Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia
Most famous are definitely the Miradouro das Portas do Sol and the Miradouro de Santa Luzia.
Miradouro do Santuário do Cristo Rei
What you really can’t miss, is the Miradouro do Santuário do Cristo Rei. It’s a huge statue of Jesus Christ in Almada, on the other side of Rio Tejo. It looks in direction of Lisbon and you really have a great view.
How to get there? Easy by ferry from the port west of Praça do Comércio. You can already enjoy a great view on both sides of the Tejo on some places of the ferry.
You often hear ‚San Francisco‘ by other tourists. The Ponte 25 de Abril bridge reminds of the Golden Gate Bridge in California.
Ocassionally there are further unknown viewpoints and terraces. One of them is the „7. most beautiful terrace in the world”. It’s in Alfama.
Miradouro da Graça
The way up to the Miradouro da Graça is rewarded with a stunning view, too.
Jardim do Torel
Maybe the most beautiful one for us, was Jardim do Torel in Santo António district. Maybe because we discovered it by accident and didn’t expect it. We were very happy.
Besides, no other tourists were present. Just locals. Although there were a lot of them, it was very calm with a great view.
You can save your money for the castle, the Castelo de São Jorge. There are so many other Miradouros. The castle is unspectacular (in our opinion), more interesting from the outside and paying € 8 just for the garden with a view? Only if you like it!
Santa Justa Elevador
In front of the Santa Justa Elevador, there was always a long queue.
You can ‚skip‘ it, by walking up. Maybe it’s not that steep, but we were having dinner just before it, so to us it was a bit exhausting. There’s a terrace on the top, which is an extra € 1.50 (you also have a great view without the terrace). If you don’t want to walk and don’t bother queuing, you pay € 3.
The view is great and worth the rise. Next to it, there is a restaurant. Sometimes, hungry sea gulls are attracted.
