Santorini is the perfect island for dreamy sunsets. Whether it’s from the water or from the Caldera doesn’t matter. It looks spectacular from everywhere.
During one week, we were on Santorini, we watched the sunset every evening. If you only have one fixed date each day, this is it.
We made a little list for you with the best sunset spots on the island. Feel inspired to do the same.
Oía Castle
Oh my god! If you really want to have a good place to sit or even see the sunset, you must be here very early. What happened here in the beginning of May is just a foretaste of what’s happening in summer. Everyone wants to see THAT sunset. See the pictures and you know what I mean.
Honestly, we just took some photos here and watched the sunset from further downstairs. You’ll notice soon that most people are afraid of going back too many steps after the sunset. So don’t worry. Even in Oía, you can find a quiet place for your own.
As soon as the sun went down, all tourists headed back to their buses and we had the castle ruins all to ourselves. We stayed here for a while and enjoyed the view. It’s worth because during the blue hour and even in the dark, the view is fantastic.
Skaros Rock at Imerovigli
You can see the Skaros Rock best from Imerovigli. It arises majestically out of the sea and looks most photogenic directly in front of the Grace Santorini Hotel.
The way there is a little bit dangerous. The stairs are covered with little stones and I managed to fall on my bottom the most inelegant way possible. Like a cartoon character. And no, there’s no picture of me looking ‘bottom-hurt’ to the far horizon. Just be careful, kids!
Back to topic: Skaros Rock. You can walk around the rock and from there you have three choices:
You can climb up that last bit of the rock. There’s a way but it didn’t seem fun. So this didn’t happen.
Or you can walk all the steps down to the chapel. We just didn’t feel like walking all the steps back in the dark.
Or you just stay where you are, on the west side of the rock. That’s what we did and it was totally fine.
Imerovigli
What can I say? The sunset looks amazing from everywhere here.
The best thing is you make a reservation for a dinner table (we can totally recommend the Mezzo restaurant). Or you maybe even have your hotel here. Anyway, it’s beautiful.
Santo Wines Winery
I mentioned this winery in the last post.
And I do it again because the sunset and everything else was absolutely perfect here.
Lighthouse at the south-westernmost point of Santorini
The south western part of the island is less developed than the north west of Santorini. Especially when coming from Red Beach at Akrotiri, it’s a different world. Time seems to stand still here. Restaurant prices are so much cheaper and the food is so delicious. But more about that in the next post.
The main reason for us to come here was to see the other Santorini. And it is really different. It’s quiet and deserted like nowhere else on the island.
I think this is the ‘real’ Santorini rather than this surreal perfect bubble called Oía. This part is as beautiful as the rest of the island. You can see the whole caldera and the volcano Islands. Everything looks so perfect.
Plus, there’s even a swing here. That’s my new hobby by the way: Finding swings and hammocks everywhere in the world.
The sunset from the lighthouse was fantastic. There were a few people here so we just sat down on the rocks below.
What I don’t get: Why are people so in a hurry after the sunset? I mean, the real crazy sky often starts immediately after the sun set. Well, we liked it a lot and we’re sure you will, too.
