Many tourists don‘t take the effort, to visit this huge property with its amazing garden. And they´re doing it wrong! The villa is located east of Rome in the cute town of Tivoli!
History of the Villa d’Este
Reconstructing the old Benedictan’s monastery was elaborate. A cardinal named Ippolito II. d’Este, who was governor in Tivoli by 1550 chose the villa as his residence. He had the idea to build a garden next to the monastery. Countless artists and architects were engaged over centuries.
It wasn’t renovated until the 1920s, destroyed again in WWII and renovated again.
To be honest, we weren’t interested in the villa too much. Our focus: the huge garden.
Villa d’Este’s gardens
The gardens are a masterpiece. There are hundreds of fountains, pounds and water games, all of them are supplied by natural water pressure.

By far the most impressing fountain! And on hot summer days the most decent place in the garden!
